Metrology

Our process begins with a piece, or many pieces, of glassware being made to specification and then lehred to remove any thermal strain that occurred during the manufacturing process. Next, the glassware is tested by our lead metrologist. He uses certified equipment, such as pipettes, syringe dispensers, and balances, to fill and weigh the glassware. Then, depending on the type of ware, he either marks the volume line or sends it back to the glassblower to be adjusted. The glassblower reworks the glass so it holds the exact volume that is required. This can take several attempts before the glassware is within tolerance. If the glassware does not need to be adjusted and only requires a volume line, the metrologist marks the line and passes it on to our graduating department. The graduation department reinforces the given volume mark and places the glassware into an acid bath. During the acid bath procedure, a permanent impression is left on the glass where the volume mark was displayed. Lastly, the impression is filled with paint and lehred again, leaving a lasting reference point for the end user.
